How do you know if your body is overacidified?
Although each of us was designed to enjoy a healthy, energetic body and an alert mind, most of the people today are overweight, tired and slow. How did that happen? Dr. Robert O. Young, author of the book The pH Miracle, Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health, states that this situation is generated by overacidification, a key element in the imbalances that occur and deepen in our body.
What does overacidified mean? The acidity or alkalinity of a substance is determined using a measure named pH (potential of hydrogen), on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 14. When the pH value is 7, the substance is considered neutral; acidic substances have a pH value lower than 7, while alkaline substances have a pH higher than 7.
According to Dr. Young’s theory, when the human body is in a state of healthy alkaline balance, the germs of disease are unable to gain a foothold. Instead, when the alkaline pH value decreases, giving ground to an acidic environment, our cells and internal organs are in danger. Pollution, smoking, drugs, overeating, excessive intake of acidic food will compromise the fragile balance of the alkaline fluids in our body.
The pH level (the acid-alkaline ratio) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our body, as the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced alkaline internal environment.
How do we know if our body is acidified?
Fat is a perfectly accurate indicator! Dr. Young has shown that fat is actually a matter of overacidification. In other words, our body creates fat cells to carry acids away from vital organs; otherwise, these fatty acids would literally choke our organs to death.
At the other end of the health measurement scale, yeast and fungi, when produced in an overacidic body, will decrease the chemical and mechanical absorption of everything we eat. This is why many people get extremely lean, which is as unhealthy as being overweight. Without proteins, our bodies can neither build new tissues, nor produce enzymes, hormones and hundreds of chemical compounds that supply our cells and bodies with energy.
Therefore, a healthy body is neither overweight, nor underweight.
Fatigue is the main symptom of an overacidic body. The toxins produced in the body, combined with an acidic environment that decreases the absorption of protein and minerals, will weaken the body’s ability to produce enzymes and hormones. This interferes with the reconstruction of cells and other components necessary to the production of energy. Hence, the result: fatigue.
Why is alkaline water so important?
In this situation, the most important thing is to hydrate our body with water. Just like the earth we live on, our body is 70% water. A diet abounding in acidic foods such as meat, cereals, dairy products or bread will generate an amount of acidic waste that will reach our blood.
If there is too much for the body to handle, the waste will be stored in organs such as heart, pancreas, liver etc., which means premature aging. Therefore, according to Dr. Young, in order to slow down and reverse the premature aging process, we must start by disposing the acidic waste from our blood and tissues, and we can do this by drinking alkaline water that measures anywhere from 9 to 11 on the pH scale. This will neutralize the harmful waste from our tissues.
On average, through perspiration, expiration, urine and stools, an adult loses about 2.,5 liters of water every day. Very active people lose even more, while diabetics lose almost 4 liters of water a day to eliminate the excess of acids. Consequently, what is lost must be replaced.
However, if we drink only what it takes to cover our losses, our body will not receive enough water to remove all the acids. Since vegetables contain as much as 90% water, a plant and vegetable diet will help us keep our body properly hydrated. Even so, proponents of alkaline diets recommend that we should drink at least 4 liters of alkaline water daily. You may start drinking a liter a day and increase the amount gradually, until this change becomes a habit.
Make sure the water you drink is alkaline (with a pH higher than 8), adding a teaspoonful of baking soda to every liter of water.
