Alkalization: A Way of Regaining and Maintaining Ideal Health
The importance of a proper alkaline-acid ratio and a balanced pH in the human body is not hot news for nutritionists and doctors.
On the contrary, it was put forward as early as the 1940s by humanity’s last prophet, Edgar Cayce, the American mystic who was talking about detoxifying the body with herbs, enemas, fasting, massage, steam baths and alkalizing food.
Recently, in a book entitled The pH Miracle, Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health, Dr. Robert O. Young pointed out: “We heal ourselves by changing the environment inside our body. Potential invaders will no longer be able to develop and, consequently, will become harmless”. Dr. Young thus reasserted an idea that Dr. Charles Bernard had stated strongly: “What we should worry about is not germs or other pathogens. It’s the breeding ground inside us…”
What does alkalization mean and what is pH?
Food nutrients, such as carbohydrates, protein, fats etc., are delivered to the cells through the blood system, which uses oxygen to burn them. What results from the burning process is energy, water, carbon dioxide (which is eliminated through the lungs) and salt waste.
Consequently, the food we eat is considered good or bad for us depending on the amount and quality of the residues (salts) it produces: alkaline or acid.
The acidity or alkalinity of a substance is determined using a measure named pH (potential of hydrogen), a logarithmic scale from 1 to 14. Every unit on this scale represents the logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. When the pH value is 7, the substance is considered neutral; acidic substances have a pH value lower than 7, while alkaline substances have a pH higher than 7.
However, alkaline residues are very seldom found in our body, since, as shown by a number of studies, practically 99% of the residues are acidic. That explains why urine and skin (perspiration), the two largest channels through which we eliminate the residues from our body, have an acidic pH.
Since the amount of such residues is so large, no wonder that our body cannot cope with the elimination process and accumulates acidic waste in excess. These residues are partly eliminated through kidneys, lungs and skin and partly stored in tissues where blood circulation is low: abdomen (in men), hips (in women), joints, certain muscles (in both men and women). Consequently, the waste we don’t manage to remove from our body turns into solid residues, such as cholesterol, fatty acids, uric acids, kidney stones, bladder stones, phosphates, sulfates and various crystalline formations that pile in our body. All this means hyperacidity, which leads to diseases, especially rheumatism, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, gout and premature aging.
Many nutritionists have gone so far as to say that all diseases have the same essential cause: too much acidity. And the excess acidity forces our body to take more alkaline minerals – calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium – from the vital organs and bone system, in order to neutralize the acid and remove it. This is another element that undermines our health.
What can we do?
Alkalizing our body means restoring a balanced pH ratio by eliminating the excess of acidic waste.
Several methods can help us do ourselves a favour and decrease the acidity level in our body:
Choosing a proper diet, based on more alkaline foods at the expense of acidic foods. A proper diet should consist of 80% alkaline and 20% acidic foods. What is an alkaline diet? One rich in grains, seeds, nuts, certain vegetables and fruit, that helps maintaining the delicate pH balance in the blood and tissues and the acid-alkaline balance of the body.
Physical exercise, followed by sauna (especially infrared sauna). The perspiration process involved when exercising helps burning calories and softens the acidic salts.
Liposuctions – surgical procedures in which certain areas where acidic waste has piled up are removed.
Last but not least, the most effective acid neutralizing method: use of alkaline water. Alkaline water dissolves acids, which are then eliminated by the kidneys.
